Increasing Access to MSME Finance
Ethiopia
AYANI designed a Challenge Fund with a view to increasing the access to finance
to MSMEs in Ethiopia. Services provided included assessment of demand and supply
for MSME finance, legal and regulatory issues, and elaborating on the fund design.
The proposed Fund is composed of a finance and a technical assistance component
(KfW, 2010).

Ghana
AYANI drafted the fund procedures manual, loan agreements and reporting formats.
OVCF’s objective was to stimulate small holder production in main value
chains in Ghana by increasing their access to finance (KfW, 2008). Launching

AYANI represented a major donor in the Launching of the Inclusive Financial Sector
(LIFS) project at the investment committee level, which includes oversight to
the microfinance unit set-up within the central bank and policy advice on other

Design concept for a Medical Credit Fund to finance and strengthen private health

One of AYANI’s Directors conducted due diligence and valued MFIs in Kenya,
Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, and negotiated, documented and completed their acquisition
or merger (Opportunity International, pre-firm incorporation). Management
Social Microfinance Fund (SMF)

AYANI was the interim fund manager of a US$10 million microfinance triple bottom-line
technical assistance fund during its formation period until the registration
of the managing foundation was completed. The fund seeks to enable emerging microfinance
service providers seeking to push the frontiers of finance through reaching poor
and hard to access market segments. The SMF covers 8 countries in Africa and
5 in Asia (Promoters, 2009 – 2010). Renewable
Energy Access Fund

Assistance in the design of a fund and the Private Placement Memorandum drafting
of an US$120 million Asian Energy Access Fund increasing finance to renewable
energy developers, operators of mini-grids, and energy access SMEs. In-country
market research was undertaken in Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand (Global
Venture Partners, 2009).

AYANI conducted credit analysis for a US$27 million global fund which seeks to
dramatically increase the offering of saving services to low income markets.
The review covered applications from financial institutions in Bhutan, Cambodia,
East Timor, Haiti, Laos, Liberia, Nepal, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Tanzania

One of AYANI’s Directors conducted, negotiated, documented and completed
the sale of three MFIs in Albania, Poland and Russia to two investment funds

AYANI is managing phase II of a major access to finance challenge fund
in Sierra Leone, together with its partners Genesis Analytics and Alitheia
Capital.
The
Challenge Fund provides both finance and technical assistance and seeks
to increase the access to rural finance in particular (KfW / UNCDF / UNDP
/
Cordaid, 2010 – 2015). Increasing

Sierra Leone
AYANI designed phase II of a US$15 million access to finance facility, recommending
a focus on rural areas and innovation in the agricultural financial product offerings
(KfW, 2009).
Zimbabwe Microfinance Wholesale Fund (ZMWF)
Zimbabwe
AYANI is assisting founding donors of a US$1,9 million wholesale fund for Microfinance
Institutions (MFIs) in Zimbabwe with monitoring services. It monitors progress
made by the Zimbabwe Association of Microfinance Institutions (ZAMFI) against
its workplan as it relates to the set-up of the new wholesale finance fund (HIVOS,
2011).
